The Inclusive Vision of We The Curious
We The Curious is a museum that prioritises inclusivity and strives to create a welcoming environment for everyone. As part of their commitment to accessibility, the venue offers a variety of features that cater to people with physical, sensory, and cognitive needs. This effort goes far beyond the standard wheelchair ramps or accessible lifts. With sensory bags, accessible signage, a Quiet Room for sensory breaks, and fully accessible pathways, We The Curious takes a proactive approach in ensuring all visitors have a comfortable experience.
Before our visit, the team at We The Curious provided us with helpful details about their accessibility features via email, and their accessibility page offers a comprehensive overview as well. We learned that sensory bags stocked with ear defenders, fidget toys, and other helpful items are available at the entrance—ideal for visitors sensitive to sensory input. They also let us know about the Quiet Room, a peaceful retreat within the venue for anyone needing a break from the vibrant environment.
The Changing Places Toilet
One of the standout facilities at We The Curious is its Changing Places Toilet, a space that truly exemplifies accessible design. This room is not just spacious but equipped to meet the needs of visitors with profound and multiple learning disabilities, as well as physical disabilities, who need extra space and specialist equipment.
The Changing Places Toilet features equipment from Astor Bannerman, and we’re proud to have played a part in making this facility a reality. The room adheres to the Changing Places specification of 12 square meters, providing plenty of room for a wheelchair user and up to two carers to move comfortably. This extra space is transformative for families and caregivers, ensuring that everyone can experience the museum without worrying about accessibility limitations.
Inside, you’ll find:
- Astor OT200 Ceiling Hoist: This ceiling track hoist provides smooth, safe transfers for individuals needing mobility assistance, significantly enhancing comfort for both users and carers.
- Astor CTE2-CP Height Adjustable Changing Table: This height-adjustable changing table accommodates users of all ages and mobility needs, offering a secure, comfortable surface for changing.
- Astor ABW Wash Basin: The ergonomic design of this height-adjustable wash basin allows users to comfortably wash their hands whether seated or standing.
A Radar key is required to access this facility, but for those without one, the staff are more than happy to provide access.
The Changing Places toilet is actually accessible to anyone visiting the Harbourside area during opening hours—no ticket is needed. Simply ask at the front desk, and they’ll gladly allow you to pop in and use it.
Accessible Pathways and Exhibit Design
We The Curious is a multi-story venue with wide corridors, smooth, accessible pathways, and spacious lifts that allow easy navigation for wheelchair users like Leo. The exhibits themselves are designed with accessibility in mind, featuring interactive elements that cater to a range of abilities. Exhibit signage is clear and easy to read, and all buttons and screens are placed at accessible heights, which made it easy for Leo to engage with the displays independently. The layout ensures that everyone, regardless of mobility, can comfortably explore the exhibits.
“Wow, what an amazing place at We The Curious! The best part was the greenscreen!” – Leo
A Day of Exploration and Discovery
The day was a joyful reminder of the difference inclusive design makes. We were able to experience We The Curious through Leo’s eyes, gaining valuable insight into how each accessible feature played a role in enhancing his day. He was free to independently navigate through the exhibits and enjoy the museum’s interactive elements, knowing that essential facilities like the Changing Places Toilet were available when he needed them.
Our visit to We The Curious underscored the importance of creating welcoming spaces for everyone. We were inspired by how their commitment to accessibility and the thoughtfully designed Changing Places facility made it possible for Leo, Jess, and countless others to fully enjoy all that this vibrant museum has to offer.
As advocates for inclusive spaces, we’re excited to see venues like We The Curious leading the way. This visit was a powerful reminder of the positive impact accessible features can have on visitors’ experiences, allowing everyone to explore, learn, and enjoy without barriers. We look forward to collaborating with more places to bring these standards of accessibility to venues across the UK.
