Project Overview
The project at Fishponds Library required us to install a fully compliant Changing Places facility, including the Astor OT200 Ceiling Track Hoist, Astor Mobile Changing Table, and the Astor ABW Height Adjustable Wash Basin. However, the library’s architecture presented significant challenges, particularly due to the structure of the ceiling and the presence of an arch that complicated the installation of the ceiling track system.
Overcoming these issues required ingenuity, precision, and close collaboration with the Council-appointed Construction Consultants, Rider Levett Bucknall, the Structural Engineer Falcon & Partners, and Creative Construction.
Engineering Challenge: The Arch and Roof Construction
The original design of the library’s ceiling posed a significant obstacle. The arch roof construction was not suitable for directly hanging the hoist, due to the makeup of the concrete form and its reduced weight loading properties. This meant that steel beams had to be integrated into the walls to support the hoist system.
Furthermore, the arch was shallow, which presented tight space constraints at the points where the arch met the walls. These space limitations, especially above the beam, required careful planning to ensure the positioning of the beams and drop rods were just right to provide sufficient coverage for the hoist.
Collaborative Solution: Box Beam, Threaded Rods, and Precise Alignment
While the concept of integrating the box beam into the side walls originated from the architect, Astor Bannerman’s expertise was key in addressing the complexities of the installation:
1. Beam Positioning
- A new box beam was installed beneath the arch to provide a level surface for the ceiling tracks.
- We ensured that the steel beams were positioned precisely to allow the hoist to cover the entire room effectively. The location of the drop rods along the beam was carefully planned to provide the best track coverage for the hoist, overcoming the spatial challenges presented by the shallow arch.
2. Fixing Alignment and Service Coordination
- Threaded rods were drilled through the box beam, secured with Nylock nuts and bolts to ensure a stable and secure connection.
- The system was designed to account for the tolerances of the arch while maintaining the necessary height above the suspended ceiling.
- Fixings were carefully coordinated to align with the deflection rates of the tracks, maintaining the system’s integrity and performance.
- Additionally, we ensured that the fixings did not conflict with the room’s ceiling services, such as lights, suspended ceiling framework, ducting, and smoke detectors.Â
3. Structural Integrity
- The integration of steel beams into the walls ensured that the hoist system was properly supported, addressing the reduced weight loading properties of the original concrete construction.
- Careful calculations and adjustments ensured that the entire system was level, functional, and compliant with Changing Places specifications.

- Structural Engineer – Falcon & Partners
- Contractor – Creative Construction
Through detailed planning, constant communication, and problem-solving, we were able to overcome the architectural challenges and deliver a fully compliant, accessible Changing Places facility.
Key Takeaways
The Fishponds Library project showcases Astor Bannerman’s ability to navigate complex architectural and structural challenges. The original box beam concept was designed by the architect, but our team’s expertise in precise positioning, alignment, and coordination with other services was essential to ensuring the hoist system’s success.
We are proud of our role in creating an accessible space at Fishponds Library and look forward to continuing our work to improve inclusivity across public spaces.
