About the Location
Situated within the beautifully maintained Victoria Embankment Gardens, the Changing Places facility forms part of an upgraded public toilet block. The area is popular with tourists, city workers, and local residents alike — providing a vital green corridor and rest point between key Tube stations, theatres, and Westminster’s iconic institutions.
Whether you’re enjoying a riverside walk, heading to a matinee at a West End theatre, or simply passing through the city, this new facility ensures that those with complex disabilities are never excluded from the experience.
Inside the Changing Places Facility
Installed by Astor Bannerman, this facility was designed to meet the full requirements of BS 8300 and the Changing Places Consortium. It includes:
- Astor OT200 Ceiling Track Hoist – Providing smooth and effortless transfers, this hoist ensures safe movement between the toilet, changing table, and wheelchair.
- Astor Invincible Changing Table – A robust, height-adjustable adult-sized changing bench designed for comfort and safety.
- Astor ABW-CP Height Adjustable Wash Basin – Allowing users to adjust the basin height for easier accessibility.
- Mobile Privacy Screen – Offering a discreet and dignified space for changing.
- Peninsular Toilet and Support Rails – Enhancing safety and ease of use for individuals and their carers.
Transforming Everyday Accessibility
In a location as high-profile and footfall-heavy as Victoria Embankment, the impact of a single Changing Places facility can be huge. It transforms an outing from stressful to simple for families, individuals, and carers who would otherwise struggle to find suitable toilet facilities in Central London.
This isn’t just about meeting regulations — it’s about building an inclusive city where no one is left behind.
Working with Architects & Project Managers
Collaboration with architects and project managers was vital in ensuring that the Changing Places facility at Victoria Embankment Gardens met all necessary regulations and was fully integrated into the centre’s design.
The facility complies with BS 8300-2:2018 and Part M of the Building Regulations, which outline the requirements for accessible toilets, including the need for at least 12m² of space, a ceiling track hoist system, and a height-adjustable changing table.
Engaging with accessibility specialists early in the process allowed the project team to select the right equipment and ensure the room layout met both regulatory and practical needs.
Championing Inclusion in the Capital
At Astor Bannerman, we believe inclusive design should be a fundamental part of every public development — and we’re proud to be part of London’s journey to provide Changing Places toilets in key locations across the city.
From major stations like Euston and King’s Cross to public parks and tourist hotspots like Victoria Embankment, we’re helping to shape a more accessible capital for everyone.
