Project Goals and Requirements
The primary objectives were:
- To provide safe and accessible bathing with appropriate postural support.
- To install equipment that could not have been accommodated in the client’s previous home.
- To meet the client’s request for both an assisted bath and a separate shower, giving flexibility in her daily routine.
Project Process and Approach
Assessment and Planning
The project involved an extensive assessment process, beginning with an evaluation of the client’s needs in their previous home and later reassessing requirements in the newly built house. Collaboration between the family, Occupational Therapist, and David Harrison from Astor Bannerman ensured all therapy and accessibility needs were met in the final design.
Installation Process
As the bathroom adaptation was part of a full house rebuild, the client and her family temporarily relocated to a hotel while the work was carried out. This allowed for a smooth and efficient installation with minimal disruption to the family.
Assisted Bath Solution
Challenges and Solutions
- Limited space in the previous home: The family opted to rebuild their home, creating a space designed specifically to meet the client’s needs now and in the future.
- Project delays due to funding and local authority changes: The project was re-engaged after 18 months, ensuring the family’s needs were fully met.
Outcome and Client Feedback
Since installation, bath time has become much easier and more comfortable for both the client and her family. The height-adjustable Astor Kiva bath provides the support she needs, ensuring she can bathe safely and with assistance when required. The Neatfold stretcher allows her parents to assist her more easily, reducing physical strain and making daily care more manageable.
The music, lights, and AirSpa features have helped create a calming environment, supporting muscle relaxation and better sleep. The family has found that the new setup not only improves the client’s comfort but also makes their daily routine more efficient.
This project demonstrates how well-planned, tailored equipment can have a significant impact on both the client’s comfort and the family’s ability to provide care.
