At Astor Bannerman, we specialise in creating accessible bathroom solutions that help people with complex needs live more comfortably and independently at home. Our team works closely with clients, their families, and Occupational Therapists, to design and install bespoke equipment that supports both ease and safety in daily routines.

In this case study, we look at how a tailored bathroom setup transformed accessibility and comfort for a client with complex care needs.

Background

Our client, a wheelchair user who requires 24-hour care, has limited mobility and can only sit (with assistance) for short periods. Previously, they relied on a small, adapted en-suite bathroom fitted with a fixed-height bath and hoist, which made daily care both challenging and uncomfortable. To improve accessibility and safety, the client’s family sought support through a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) after consulting with an Occupational Therapist.

Project Goals and Requirements

The main objectives of the bathroom renovation were to improve accessibility and safety for both the client and their carers. Carers needed a height-adjustable bath to accommodate the client comfortably and safely. Specific requests included a changing table integrated into the bath, re-siting of the hoist for better positioning, and more space to allow for safe, convenient movement around the bath.

Project Process and Approach

Following an initial assessment, we demonstrated possible suitable baths at the client’s home. Key features of the Astor Rio Fusion, such as the bath’s integrated guards and a digital removeable control (which was to be mounted safely away from the bath) were carefully explained and customised to the client’s needs. Due to space constraints, enabling works were necessary to increase the bath area by removing tiles and fitting Whiterok.

CAD plans were created and shared with the clients, to ensure that they were happy with the design.

Installation took place in the final week of August, aligned with a bank holiday. The enabling works were completed over three days to minimise disruption. Our team attended on Tuesday at midday to begin the final installation, which was completed smoothly by 6 pm.

Solution and Equipment Provided

Astor Bannerman provided an Astor Rio Fusion bath with full enabling works, which included modifications to flooring and pipework to maximise the available space. This new setup allows the client’s showering, changing, and bathing needs to be managed in one place, minimising strain on both the client and their carers. The bath was fitted with a specialised head cushion to enhance stability, engaging the client’s core strength for additional balance support.

The Astor Rio Fusion bath is a shorter version of the Astor Kiva Fusion. Please contact us for more information.

Challenges and Solutions

One of the unique challenges of the project was completing the installation before the end of August. With the bath design finalised just before the deadline, the only feasible installation window was the bank holiday week. Additionally, space constraints required re-tiling and strategic positioning adjustments, which were successfully managed by our team to align with the agreed timeline.

Outcome and Client Feedback

The new bathroom setup meets all objectives, delivering on safety, accessibility, and comfort for the client and carers. The client’s family expressed satisfaction, noting the positive impact on daily routines. Although we haven’t yet observed the client’s progress first-hand, we have been told that their core strength is gradually improving, an encouraging outcome facilitated by the enhanced setup.

This project underscores Astor Bannerman’s commitment to personalised care solutions that adapt seamlessly to our clients’ unique requirements, supporting greater comfort, independence, and quality of life.
