As part of our mission to highlight accessible spaces, our team recently visited the Royal West of England Academy (RWA) in Bristol with Leo and his carer, Jess.

Known as the UK’s only regional Royal Academy of Art, RWA is a prestigious cultural venue that showcases world-class exhibitions and supports emerging artists.

With its stunning Grade II* listed building, the RWA is a landmark of Bristol’s vibrant arts scene. However, historic sites often pose accessibility challenges, making the addition of a Changing Places facility a crucial step toward inclusivity.

Improving Accessibility at RWA

RWA has taken significant strides to ensure that art and culture are accessible to all. The installation of a Changing Places facility allows visitors with complex mobility needs to experience exhibitions, events, and workshops in comfort and dignity.

The facility includes:

  • Privacy Screen (Mobile) – Offering additional discretion and comfort for users and caregivers.

Experiencing the Space Firsthand

Our visit was more than just a showcase—it was an opportunity for real-world testing. Leo and Jess explored the space, providing valuable insights into the functionality and ease of use of the facility.

Leo, who has complex disabilities, shared his thoughts on the accessibility features, while Jess offered feedback on the practicality of the space from a caregiver’s perspective.

“It’s great to see accessibility improvements in places like this. I feel much more comfortable knowing the right facilities are here,” said Jess.

“It is beautiful building and charging place was huge.” – Leo

RWA: A Historic Venue with a Commitment to Inclusion

As a venue that celebrates art, creativity, and community engagement, RWA’s commitment to accessibility extends beyond the installation of a Changing Places facility.

The gallery has introduced step-free access, improved pathways, and inclusive programming to welcome visitors of all abilities.

With over 175 years of history, RWA continues to evolve, ensuring that everyone—regardless of their physical needs—can engage with the arts.
